As we age, our needs evolve—and with the right support, staying independent and stylish is easier than ever. The Shapes United Adaptive Clothing range empowers older Australians to dress with confidence, comfort, and ease.
Adaptive clothing makes dressing easier and supports everyday independence. It offers comfort and confidence for seniors, older Adults, and caregivers by reducing physical strain and helping people stay connected to the activities and moments they love.
How you can access it
The Shapes United range can be funded in two ways under Support at Home’s Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT‑HM) program:
1. Assistive Technology (AT)
Adaptive clothing can be funded as Assistive Technology when it helps with:
- independence
- safety
- ease of daily tasks
AT items fall into:
- Low‑risk – simple, no prescription
- Under advice – recommended by a professional
- Prescribed – requires a qualified health professional (e.g., OT)
2. Home Modifications
This category covers physical changes to the home (rails, ramps, etc.). It does not fund clothing but is another support category you may be approved for.
You may receive AT only, home modifications only, or both depending on your assessment.
How to get funding
- Aged Care Assessment
Complete an assessment through My Aged Care. - Approval for AT Funding
Your Notice of Decision will outline whether you are approved for AT and at what level: low, medium, or high. - Meet Item Requirements
Some items need a prescription or professional recommendation. - Work With Your Support at Home Provider
They will help source items, arrange delivery, and provide any training or setup needed.
Why adaptive clothing?
Clothing and fashion can have a tremendous positive effect on an individual's mental and physical well-being, for several reasons:
Individuals with conditions that cause pain often experience painful joint movements when dressing and undressing. In limiting the need for these movements, adaptive clothing offers pain relief.
Support At Home
It has been determined that The Shapes United Adaptive Clothing range is considered as “acceptable use of government funds delivered within Support at Home budgets … sitting within Level 2, 3 or 4” as providers can easily assess the benefits and features to “enable participants to remain living safely and independently in their home and/or improve health and wellbeing”.
